A QR Code ("Quick Response" code) is a 2 dimensional bar code capable of being read by a free mobile phone application and any phone with a camera. Although QR codes have been big in Japan for years and broke into Europe more recently, they are just now gaining traction in US. Android phones will all come with a QR code reader and Facebook plans on using them very soon too.
A quick search of Google shows 22 million hits for QR Codes but they are virtually unknown here in the US.
In its simplest sense think "print based hypertext link" - simply encode a website URL, text message, SMS message, contact information, vcard, social network or even GPS coordinates into the QR Code and then point a mobile phone (or other camera-enabled mobile) at it. If the device has QR Code decoding software installed on it, it will fire up and activate the correct application to handle the encoded data appropriately courtesy of the FNC1 Application Identifiers that are embedded in the encoded data. To make things a bit more robust, the QR Code also contains its own error correction data, internal orientation calibration and self-alignment markers. In this way it doesn't matter whether the QR code is upside down or wrapped around a curved surface, the message will still get through.

It's suprising how many marketing opportunities QR codes open up. Here are just a few ideas:
• Newspapers, magazines, collateral materials - if you read something interesting you can scan for additional information such as a research article, website, video or contact information.

• Point of sale coupons -simply bring the code in to a retail outlet and have them scan the coupon right from your phone.
